About Functional Wellness Care

Functional Wellness Care addresses the underlying root causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional Medicine looks at the interactions among spinal, genetic, environmental, diet, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, Functional Medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.

Physiotherapy

To complement and enhance the healing effects of Dr. Wasserman's specific Chiropractic manipulative treatment, Dr. Wasserman may also provide the following physiological therapeutic procedures:

  • Ultrasound
  • Electrical muscle stimulation
  • Moist heat therapy
  • Low Level Laser Therapy
  • Specific therapeutic stretches/exercise program
  • Mechanical traction
  • Cryotherapy
  • Corrective Exercises
  • Spinal and Postural Screenings

Physiological and Therapeutic Effects:

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a therapeutic treatment using high-frequency sound waves administered in the region of soft tissue injuries.Ultrasound treatment uses gel to conduct the sound waves at room temperature and may temporarily feel cool to the skin when it is initially applied. The treatment can be usually administered directly to the area of complaint, penetrating deep into the body. The rise in temperature, increases blood flow, relaxes muscle spasms, massages damaged tissues, and speeds the healing process. Sound vibrations as fast as million times per second, penetrate the tissues deep in the body, creating a heat response. These vibrations and heat help break down and disperse unhealthy calcium and other hard tissue accumulations.Ultrasound treatment is very effective in treating calcium deposition, healing without irritation, speeding metabolism, improving blood flow, reduces nerve root irritation, and enhances the body's natural healing ability.

Electro-Therapy

Electro-Therapy is a therapeutic treatment to aid in the relief of pain and the promotion of soft tissue healing. Ligament sprains, muscle strains and spasms often respond to this treatment, helping to reduce atrophy and increase blood circulation. Tiny amounts of electrical impulses are induced into the tissues in the vicinity of the injury. Where these waves intersect below the surface of the skin, a low-frequency stimulation is created. This prompts the body to secrete endorphins and other natural pain killers to help relieve pain.Electro-Therapy reduces painful symptoms, decreases local swelling, promotes muscle tone, restores normal movements, release the body's natural pain killers and accelerates the healing process.

Superficial Heat

Hot packs, warm moist towels, heating pads, water bottles and infrared lamps are the forms of Superficial Heat and are often used to help raise the temperature of soft tissues directly below the surface of the skin. Using heat to calm tissues suffering from long term spasm or irritation is an easy way to increase flexibility, range of motion, and promote increased circulation to speed the healing process. Any forms of Superficial Heat applied to the surface of the skin enlarges blood vessel below the surface, relaxing tissues, and can temporarily relieve painful symptoms. Forms of Superficial Heat help increase circulation, relaxing muscle tension, reducing joint stiffness, and preparing tissues for rehabilitation.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a term that describes the application of ice, cold towels, ice massage and compresses to reduce the temperature of tissues directly on or below the surface of the skin. Ice is most often used to manage acute injuries or recent eruptions of chronic conditions. Cooling affected tissue is effective in reducing and preventing post traumatic swelling. Cryotherapy is inexpensive, readily available, and an easy way to reduce local swelling of inflamed tissues. Surface cooling constricts blood vessels, numbs painful areas, and helps relax muscle spasm. Cold temperatures reduce nerve transmission of painful symptoms and provide temporary relief. Cryotherapy helps reduce swelling, inflammation, numbs affected area to reduce pain, and reduces muscle spasms. Cryotherapy or ice therapy should be applied only every two hours for 20 minutes.

Low Level Laser

Low Level Laser is a non-thermal laser capable of penetrating deep into tissue. Once delivered, light energy promotes the process of photobiostimulation. The positive effect of photobiostimulation on animal cells is analogous to photosynthesis in plant cells, where a chain of chemical reactions is set in motion. In human tissue, the resulting photochemical reaction produces an increase in the cellular metabolism rate, which expedites cell repair and stimulation of the immune, lymphatic and vascular systems. The net result, observed in clinical trials to date, is an apparent reduction in pain, inflammation, edema and an overall reduction in healing time.

Corrective Exercises

We teach our patients special "blueprint" exercises designed just for them to help strengthen and correct their own unique problem. These exercises can be performed in the comfort of your own home and can improve the effectiveness of your spinal correction by as much as 30-40%. In addition to skeletal misalignment, muscles and connective tissues can be out of place or strained by improper alignment and use. Specific exercises and stretches can help your body hold the adjustments, stay in balance, and maintain your health.

Spinal & Postural Screenings

Posture and spinal screenings can reveal important health information and unlock the door to improved health and well-being.

There are many different styles of chiropractic techniques. The Gonstead technique of chiropractic is a method of chiropractic assessment and adjustments that is very methodical, precise, and scientific. Also, the technique takes more time to learn than other methods. As a result, a Gonstead Chiropractor is often called the "gold standard" of chiropractic. The Gonstead adjustments themselves are more precise than a typical chiropractic adjustment, which allows the doctor to use a more gentle thrust, while still moving the bone. The precision of this adjustment also results in a higher degree of clearance of nerve interference caused by the VSC (Vertebral Subluxation Complex).

.

The Gonstead Chiropractor is also unique because doctors who practice this technique utilize a Nervoscope, which is a hand-held instrument that detects temperature differences from one segment of the spine to the next, giving the doctor an objective component to their analysis. In addition to using the Nervoscope, a Gonstead Chiropractor also use the tools of posture evaluation, weight bearing scales, static palpation, spinal motion palpation, range-of-motion, orthopedic and neurological exam, x-ray, and symptomatology to determine which particular vertebra is subluxated.
