Hi, Steven,

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

Recent studies have shown that they have numerous side effects, from an altered gut environment and impaired nutrient absorption to an increased risk for cardiovascular events, kidney disease, and dementia. I covered these in my first article on PPIs, “The Dangers of Proton Pump Inhibitors.”

Despite this, the conventional medical establishment still considers these drugs to be safe.

PPIs have become one of the most commonly prescribed classes of drugs in the industrialized world. In 2014, Americans filled more than 170 million prescriptions for acid blockers, falling behind only statins in total cost expenditure worldwide.

And in many cases, patients are prescribed PPIs with no just cause.

A 2010 study found that of 946 patients receiving PPI therapy in a hospital setting, 65 percent were prescribed PPIs without an appropriate upper gastrointestinal tract diagnosis

Every year, scientists publish new studies linking PPIs to even more problems.

I summarized the latest research in an article called “Eight More Reasons to Avoid Proton Pump Inhibitors.” These reasons include:

  1. PPIs increase the risk of serious gut infections.
  2. PPI use is associated with SIBO.
  3. PPIs alter the microbiota to exacerbate liver disease.
  4. PPIs increase the risk of stroke.
  5. PPIs may cause an evolutionary mismatch.
  6. PPI use is associated with iron deficiency.
  7. PPI use during pregnancy may increase childhood asthma.
  8. PPIs increase the risk of death.

If you’re working as a clinician or a health coach, it’s virtually certain that you have patients and clients who are taking these drugs.

As healthcare professionals, we are obligated to educate the people we work with on the potential benefits and harms of the treatments they pursue.

I hope that the articles above can be helpful resources for you.

In health,
Chris
