There are a few tricks I’ve learned over the years that tend to help most people get some relief. If you’re feeling like you need a laxative, try some of these things first:

👉 Drink water. If you don’t drink enough water, your body will sequester it from the stool. That means hard and dry stool that will not pass easily. Even if you think you’re drinking enough water already, drink more.
👉 Sip warm water. Sip on a glass of warm water when you first wake in the morning. This is a natural time to have a bowel movement, and the warm liquid can get things going.
👉 Eat more healthy fats. That means things like avocados, coconut oil, olive oil, and nuts. Healthy fats stimulate the release of bile, which helps with gut motility.
👉 Eat potassium-rich foods. Fruits and vegetables like broccoli, squash, bananas, and tomatoes not only provide fiber but also potassium, which your colon needs for good motility.

Another thing to try is changing up your position when you try to have a bowel movement. Historically, humans always crouched to pass stool. You’ll be in better alignment if you position yourself in a crouched position, with your knees above your hips.  I recommend the Squatty Potty, you will look like "The Thinker!"
